okay well this book isn’t set in an insane asylum, but the characters in it need to be.
it’s called Double Identity

it’s a really short book i read it in a couple days.
but it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Instead of looking for another book with similar subject matter (since this one was so good), I’d recommend you try another book by the same author. Dennis Lehane is hard to beat, and he’s written several books. Have you read Mystic River? It’s excellent too.http://www.dennislehanebooks.com/

Lisa Shilling is a 16-year-old who is suffering from a mental breakdown. Her verbalizations become increasingly bizarre and her behavior more erratic and unstable. She tells her parents and 12-year-old sister that she is going crazy, but they brush her concerns aside. In one memorable blunder on her parents’ part, they send her to a nursing home in Florida during winter break with the idea of sweeping her bizarre behavior under the rug without “the neighbors finding out.”
