Painting Concrete Floors In Our House?

I am wanting to put hardwood floors in our house but money is tight right now, our dog got sick and befor we had to have her put down she got to the point of only being able to use the bathroom in the house, this is a 100 pound dog, so we couldnt get the smell out of the carpet. So in the mean time we just have bare concrete slab. Can I paint the floors until time to get the hardwood flooring? If so what steps should I take in doing so? 10 Points for the most helpful

  1. ye sure just scrap up any loose debri….. and paint away….wal mart got great paint… use an out door cement paint…not many choices of color tho ..grey is always good…regular paint can be slippery…out door cement paint has a bit of fine sand in it to prevent slipping….just roll it on

  2. painting cement is called staining. there is a specific type of stain used for cement. anyone at a paint supply store or section of store should know exactly what you need. but yes, you can paint cement. they may even be able to mix a color for you like they can with other paint/stains.

  3. Clean the Floor thoroughly and use a special Product (ask at the Hardware Store) to prep the Concrete. You then can use any Porch Paint for example. You may never put Wood over it.
I love Concrete and just use area rugs. What a pleasure to clean.

  4. Like boredsti said. I would just use a 2 part epoxy paint for more durability.

  5. paint it with a concrete or stucco paint

  6. I would not recommend it. The concrete floor in my basement was painted by the previous owners and it has been peeling off ever since I bought the house. Concrete is permanently damp in most cases and it is tough to get regular floor paints to adhere properly.
You might want to take a look at an attractive interim solution that will look just like wood, require no surface preparation and that can be easily removed later on when you upgrade to wood. Go to Home Depot and look at the Trafficmaster Allure series solid vinyl “floating” self-adhesive plank flooring. It runs around $1.79 a square foot, is super easy to install with a utility knife, a steel ruler, scissors and a framing square for 90 degree cuts. Is completely impervious to moisture and has a 25 year warranty. I just helped my friend install it in her bathroom and it looks great — even feels like natural wood. I was so impressed I am planning to put it in my entryways, stairs, basement family room and maybe my own bathroom. There are about 20 different wood designs (they have 6 of them right in stock) plus designs that look like porcelain or slate tile. No one will ever know it is not real material. And since it sticks to itself and not the floor underneath you can easily pick it up and use it in another room later.
